New Blood & Plunder Faction Boxes

Firelock Games has just released some great new product packages, and they have a HOT sale to promote these for the next couple weeks! Let’s jump in!

New Blood & Plunder Army Boxes

These new army boxes are essentially great combinations off different sets of their plastics multipart mini sprues that set you up to build a cohesive army for Blood & Plunder. They do not include new miniatures or options, but they are flexible, accessible, and offer some unique perks.

Each box is unique, but basically contains 5 of Firelock sprues of 6 models, along with some extra minis unique to the specific force style.

Sea Rovers Faction Box

This box is perfect for the ambitious pirate player. You can jump into so many different factions with this box. Golden Age Pirates, English Buccaneers, French Privateers, Dutch Privateers, Spanish Guarda Costas, and pretty much any faction that fights primarily at sea.

This box contains:

  • 3 Sailor Sprues
  • 2 Militia Sprues
  • 1 Box of Plunder Sprue

Each of the primary sprues has 6 customizable minis, giving you a crew of 30 men. The Sailor sprue is very flexible and customizable, containing options for pistols, muskets, blunderbusses, explosives, brace of pistols, and even lances. The Militia sprue focuses on building models with muskets, but there is a large variety of heads, hats, and equipment.

You can find several articles here on building out these sprues in different ways:

The Box of Plunder Sprue contains a bunch of fun and useful bits, along with three great minis: Priest, Commander, and Blackbeard.

The rest of the sprue is filled with fun goodies to customize your other sprues: flagstaff, drum, parrot, drum, alternate hands, casualty markers etc. This sprue is great value!

This is a great box for setting you up to play a lot of games of Blood & Plunder at sea with pretty much any faction.

Colonial Military Faction Box

This faction box can be used to create most of the Militia and Army factions in Blood & Plunder.

Examples include:

  • Spanish Militia
  • North American English Militia
  • New France Garrison
  • Dutch Caribbean Militia

The box contains:

  • 3 Militia Sprues
  • 2 Soldier Sprues
  • Box of Plunder Sprue

The Militia sprues can be used to build many different units, most usefully, all the different nations’ core Militia units. The Soldier box can be used to make 17th century soldiers, 18th century soldiers, provincials or even grenadiers. With options for Matchlock or Flintlock Muskets, different styles of cartridge boxes, and a couple different hat options, you can do a lot with these sprues.

The “Box of Plunder” sprue gives you that excellent fancy Commander, along with some great militia/army options like the drummer and standard bearer (and dead guys).

If you like playing land games, focusing more on the colonial militia and army style forces in Blood & Plunder, this is a great option!

Caribbean Native American Faction Box

If you want to jump into the Native American factions within Blood & Plunder, this is a great starting point!

Factions you can start with using this box include:

  • Caribs (Kalinago)
  • Darien
  • Golden Island Tribe
  • Black Caribs
  • Caribbean Tribes

This box allows you to build an army of up to 31 models with a variety of weaponry. The box contains:

  • 5 Native American Sprues
  • 1 Customizable Native Commander

The Native American sprue is one of the tricker sprues to build, but it contains options for African and Caribbean heads and lots of weapon options, including spears, clubs, bows, and muskets.

Perks & Drawbacks of New Faction Boxes

OK, we’ve looked at what these boxes include. What kind of value are we getting here? What are the pros and cons?

First, these are a great affordable option that can function in a similar manner to the more expensive resin Faction boxes (which recently had a price raise). At the $69 price point, you’re paying about $2.15 per mini with these boxes, compared to $4.76 per mini in the 25 mini resin Faction Boxes. If you buy the plastics within their normal Sailor, Soldier, Militia, and Native boxes, you’re paying $2.41 per mini, so this is a better deal than your standard boxes of 12 minis for $29.

That said, you have to put a little more work into these boxes, than the 1-piece resins. Some people love building plastics minis, and some people don’t enjoy it all. The Blood & Plunder plastic sprues are pretty good but not perfect. The sailor sprue is very flexible but also pretty fiddly. Glueing hands on minis can be frustrating and the arms are not as flexible and interchangeable as you might wish. The Militia and Soldiers sprues are really user-friendly, but not as customizable. You can change heads and weapons, but there’s not a lot options for changing poses without reaching for the Green Stuff. The Native American sprue takes some more advanced mini building skills, with some small pieces, and difficult arm situations required from the bow and arrow poses.

Blood & Plunder Plastic Sailor Model Sprue

That said, these sprues are much more customizable than the 1-piece resins. You can make your minis your own and a bit different than anyone else’s! But it takes some sweat, maybe some blood, and probably colorful word or two when building them all.

You gain value, customization but you lose a little flavor. Firelock Games has built up an amazing set of resin sculpts that reflect the dress, attitude and weaponry of each nation within Blood & Plunder. The plastic multipart minis are by necessity more generic, and lack some of the flair that is possible within each nation. But you can make up for that with your paint jobs. Or you can lean into more generic minis and then get away with using those minis in all your armies and play all the nations!

To summarizes:

  • PROS
    • Affordable
    • More minis than resin Nation Boxes
    • Customizable
    • Versatile
  • CONS
    • Must be assembled
    • Less dynamic poses than resins
    • Lacks some of “national flair” you see in resin minis

Final Thoughts

I hope you find these new packages useful and new-player-friendly! Combined with a rulebook, this is a great way to get into Blood & Plunder, but it’s also a great way for a veteran player to build out their armies a bit more, or jump into a new style of force.

While there is nothing new in these sets, they are great products, especially as alternatives to the more premium resin Nation Boxes. The resins have been very successful for Firelock Games, but they have barely been able to keep up with demand for the resins, and this may be an attempt to make the plastics more attractive and accessible. In other words, Firelock is drowning in orders for resins and they want people to order plastics!
