Here’s the new Dutch Commander, another mini preview for the upcoming Wave 2 Blood & Plunder miniature Kickstarter coming up in late Q1 2026. We’ve already checked out the English, Spanish, Native, and Maroon Commanders and we feel they’re really doing a great job with these new minis!

New Blood & Plunder Dutch Commander
This sculpt is to represent the “generic Dutch Commander” in Blood & Plunder. It was created with the mid 17th century in mind (1655-1670), as that is the focus of the upcoming Kickstarter project. While it was sculpted with Dutch styles and fashions in mind, it could be used by other nations as well.

This is an active mini with a new style of pose for Firelock Games. With sword drawn and held across they body, he looks ready to lead his crew in a boarding action and engage the enemy commander in a duel.

Dutch Commander Sculpt
I really like the old original Dutch Commander model, but I really appreciate this one in that it doesn’t look so clearly focused on sea command. This guy looks like he could command a ship, but also a force on land.

Firelock Games has really raised the bar with detail, cleanness, and interesting poses with these new models.

This commander’s face is really the focal point of this mini.

And the sword detail is just so good! The gloves are a new feature on this mini.
The hat is pretty wide, which kind of obscured that intense face.

Painting the Dutch Commander
I had a hard time selecting colors for this mini. And I’m all ready to paint a second using an alt color scheme! But yellowish basic color seemed quintessential Dutch to me.

I used a lot of colors from the Monument Hobbies Blood & Plunder paint set. I particularly enjoyed the reds in the set on this model.
I used the Yellow Ochre as the base for the coat, and highlighted it with the warm yellow. The Citadel washes has been causing me issues with a glossy finish recently so I switched it up and tried some of the Vallejo washes. Their washes are a lot more subtle, and I probably should have applied a second layer of wash to some areas.

Here’s some shots all around this fancy Englishman.

I used the darker red for his waistcoat and the lighter red for the coat, but by the time I did wash and highlights, its difficult to tell that they’re actually different colors.

I used a mix of Vallejo and Pro Acryl paints for the metals.
Dan’s Dutch Commander
Dan is our resident Dutchman and he’s painted up this commander with a nice blue scheme:

Dexter’s Dutch Commander
Dexter Heide just released a great little video showcasing a ton of the Dutch models, new and old. Check out his Dutch Commander.

Firelock Games Promo Pictures

Here’s a promo shot of the whole line of Dutch models for Wave 2. Some really great stuff in there!
The Blood & Plunder Dutch Commander Range

It’s been a while since the Dutch got a new Commander! In fact, it’s been a while since they got any new minis!

And my full collection of Dutch Commanders (not all painted by me).

We don’t have a copy painted, but there is a new Legendary Dutch Commander coming out with this guy! We will double our Dutch Commander options in this project! Keep an eye out for a preview of Jelles de Lecat, or Captain Yellows.

Final Thoughts

Here are the all the “generic commanders” we’ve previewed so far for this Wave 2 project. Left to Right: English, Dutch, Maroon, Spanish, and Native. We just have the French one to go!

And with the Historical Commander models, there’s a ton of new options!

There’s a couple minis in this pic that we haven’t previewed yet. Admiral Myngs will be our next preview, and Roche Brasiliano has had a major adjustment, so might be a little longer for that mini. And somehow I failed to get Bartolomeu Português in there!

We’ve done a lot of previews for this project now and I know we’re all getting antsy for the project to actually launch! “Soon” is the word on the street. Thanks for Firelock Games for sending us these preview minis to paint and share!
