French Commander – Wave 2 Blood & Plunder Mini Preview

Here’s the new French Commander, another mini preview for the upcoming Wave 2 Blood & Plunder miniature Kickstarter coming up in late Q1 2026. You can check out the previously previewed Dutch, English, Spanish, Native, and Maroon Commanders in addition to various other units previewed here on the blog. These “Wave 2” models were Kickstarted in May and are scheduled to release late in 2026 (Kickstarter fulfillment is looking like December at the moment and late pledges are still open).

New Blood & Plunder French Commander

This sculpt is to represent the “generic French Commander” in Blood & Plunder. It was created with the mid 17th century in mind (1655-1670), as that is the focus of the upcoming Kickstarter project. While it was sculpted with French styles and fashions in mind, it could be used by other nations as well.

This is an active mini with a new style of pose for Firelock Games. With sword drawn and held across they body, he looks ready to lead his crew in a boarding action and engage the enemy commander in a duel.

French Commander Sculpt

The original French Commander model is awesome, but it’s great to have a new one!

WIP rendering of the French Commander

The original French Commander is very formal with a wig a huge hat, and this model offers a great contrast with less formal clothes, long hair, some facial hair, and a villainous expression!

The pose, similar to the Wave 2 Dutch Commander, is more active with sword and pistol in hand.

The hat is prominent again in this model, but it doesn’t obscure the face, and what a face it is! The nose is large and gives him a “main villian” vibe.”

His shirt and pants are billowy, with a short sleeveless jacket over the top.

Painting the Wave 2 French Commander

I fell into my favorite red/white/blue combo with this model, which turns out is not a subtle reference to the modern French flag. His coat, baldric, and pistols break up the patriotic combo with a lot of browns.

I used a few paints from several brands here, including Monument Hobbies, Vallejo, and Citadel.

Dr. D has painted up this model with a different color scheme.

Focusing on blue, white and yellow, this paint job brings to mind the French Royal Standard. He just needs some putti on his shoulders!

Here’s some shots all around this sleazy Frenchman.

Final Thoughts

We’re excited for this new French Commander model! He’ll be excellent for a French Buccaneers, Brethren of the Coast, Logwood Cutters, or even French Caribbean Militia force.

The new Wave 2 sculpts are really great and we’re looking forward to them shipping out to backers in December 2026! If you weren’t able to catch the Kickstarter when it was live, it looks like it still has the option to add late pledges/preorders.

And that project comes with new unique commander models as well, including Christopher Myngs, Roc Brasiliano, Bartolmeu Portugues, Jelles de Lecat, Juan Gallardo, Young Henry Morgan, Cristobal Arnaldo Issasi, Juan de Serras and some additional special models. More previews of those last models coming soon!
