Spanish Lanceros – Wave 2 Blood & Plunder Miniature Preview

Intro

New Blood and Plunder minis keep pouring in out of Firelock Games and I got my hands on another set for the lead up to the new Rise of the Buccaneers Kickstarter happening soon. This expansion will primarily deal with early privateering exploits of buccaneers based out of the freshly captured island of Jamaica. In addition the guerilla war perpetuated by Spanish and Spanish loyal maroons and natives on the island will be a focus. These new Lanceros will feel right at home waiting in ambush for unsuspecting Englishmen in the jungles of Jamaica.

The Kickstarter project for these miniatures is scheduled to start on April 2.

New Spanish Lanceros Sculpts

These Lanceros are a new take on the Spanish cow killers who tended to the ranches across the Spanish main. In times of raids they may also be turned against the enemies of the Spanish crown. Historically these men were lower class and many would have been poor free men, indentured servants, or slaves. In the 17th century Spain was very wary of giving out gunpowder weapons to just anyone so these guys had to adapt a fighting style to the tools and weapons they had. In the game this unit is a premiere Melee unit on land with tools and rules to strike fear into the opposing player. Let’s get into how the minis look!

About the Minis

Lancero Mini #1

This guy looks to be of African descent and is wearing a shortish sleeve frock along with breeches boothose and buckled shoes, fancy! He’s carrying a machete on his belt. The machete lacking a cross guard would have been more a tool than a weapon but in a pinch a blade is a blade. He also carries a gourd water bottle most likely lined on the inside with bee’s wax, Hydrate or Diedrate.

Lancero Mini #2

Looks like another African man for this one to me, he is wearing a simple workman’s jacket and very baggy breeches. I love the simple frill at the bottom of the jacket; it gives the costume a lot more character. He also has a machete and is very aggressive in his stance. He goes bare legged and footed. Might have been pretty rough running through the Caribbean with bare feet, but if anyone was used to it it would probably be Africans and natives.

Lancero Mini #3

I tried to paint this mini to be a mixed race Spaniard. He looks like he is in only a shirt and baggy breeches. He’s got bare legs but he is wearing sandals so that’s an upgrade. Again I love the aggressive stance and the bandana adds some flair. Like the others so far he has a machete and an over the shoulder bag.

Lancero Mini #4

Finally we come to the snappy dresser of the group. He wears a longer sleeveless doublet (or possibly waistcoat) and breeches. His stockings are tied with ribbons and he is wearing shoes with leather laces. He has a cravat, with tassels! This man is dressing for the job he wants. Another clue to his status(or aspirations) would be that he carries an actual sword.

Painting the Spanish Lanceros

I used Monument Hobbies paints for this project with a mix of Citadel shades and Vallejo metallics.

It’s always fun for me to paint diverse skin tones on miniatures. This set allows for this historically because unfortunately a good chunk of the lower class in the Americas were non-white. I have always appreciated Firelock Game’s commitment to historical authenticity and I think it is visible in this set of miniatures

The New Spanish Lanceros with Original Spanish Lanceros

The new set nicely complements the old set.

Final Thoughts

These lanceros are awesome representations of Spanish cattle ranchers defending Spanish holdings. Everyone here at Blood and Pigment is excited about the new Kickstarter “Rise of the Buccaneers”. These Lanceros will make a great addition for any player wishing to expand a Spanish collection.
