2025 Great Pirate Paint Off – March 10 Update

The 2025 Great Pirate Paint Off contest for Blood & Plunder and Oak & Iron is half over! In this update we will look at the prizes and deadlines coming up in March, highlight some of the great entries from the past couple weeks, and then give away a couple prizes to entrants in the Oak & Iron and Terrain categories from February.

First, congratulations Erich and Mike for winning in the Oak & Iron and Terrain categories!

What’s Happening in March?

March is the big month for the Great Pirate Paint Off! The Blood & Plunder Unit category will be judged and awarded at the end of the month. We finished Commander, Characters, Terrain and Oak & Iron, and now we’re down to the meat and potatoes of the contest. Time to build your army up!

Mid March Drawing Prize

We will be holding drawing giveaways in the middle and at the end of the month. On March 16th we will be giving away a Lightbox which is a helpful tool for taking good pictures of your minis. Take your unit pictures in this light box and you’re sure to win at the end of the month!

End of March Drawing Prize

At the end of the month we will be giving away a “Everlasting Wet Palette,” an invaluable tool for improving your enjoyment and results in your hobby painting.

I’ve used several wet palettes and this is the best! Easy to take care of, and very helpful for the busy gamer who doesn’t get to sit down and paint every day, this can really up your painting game! You can find a good description and more info on this product here.

Plunder Den Terrain Flash Challenge Extended!

We were planning to award the prize for the Plunder Den Terrain Flash Challenge here at the end of February as well, but we are extending it until the end of March! Get your entries in! It’s a fun project and easy to use for your North American tables in the cold north!

The techniques you will learn following Dexter’s tutorial will serve you well in many other projects as well! Right now we only have a couple entries and we’d love to get a bunch more! Dexter is giving away some of his own handcrafted terrain as a prize! Get your entries in! You can find the entry form and all the other details here!

Prize Winners for end of February

For both the Oak & Iron and Terrain categories, we are doing a drawing for another prize. These are drawn randomly from all participants who entered in these categories during the month of February, one chance per person, regardless of how many entries.

Oak & Iron Prize – Kraken from Timber & Sail

Our prize here is a playable Kraken monster for Oak & Iron, designed and sculpted by Jason Klotz from Timber & Sail.

Our prize for this drawing goes to Josiah Huss!

Josiah entered several great pieces this month, including a creative Flying Dutchman Fluyt complete with a light, an awesome Oak & Iron Fort, and a beautiful 6th Rate Frigate that was in the top 5 for People’s Choice!

Terrain Prize – Spanish House from Miniature Building Authority

Our prize for the end of the Terrain category is a pre-painted Spanish House from Miniature Building Authority. A big thanks to Miniature Building Authority for donating this prize this year!

Randomly drawn from all the Terrain participants in February, this prize goes out to Greg Padilla! Check out Greg’s couple scratch built pieces he entered last month.

A native temple gateway, a set of stone walls, and some jungle blocking terrain.

Greg is an incredible gamer, painter and crafter and has served the Blood & Plunder community as both Commander and Second Mate for the Pirates in the last couple Summer of Plunder events. Congratulations to Greg for some great looking terrain and for a nice prize!

More Great Terrain Entries

Check out some of these other great terrain entries.

House by Daniel Wray

This looks like an MDF kit, but they can be tricky to paint well. Very nice work.

Caribbean Huts by Brad Horton

These huts are scratch built and I happen to know they will be part of a cool scenario at the upcoming Enfilade! convention in Tacoma, WA on Memorial Day Weekend. Adam and Brad and a couple other guys are working hard on making a really great table for a Jamaican Plantation Raid scenario!

Various Scatter Terrain by Jacob Zuvic

It’s always good to have some scatter terrain you can place anywhere on the board to provide cover and obstacles. Check out these walls and a couple non-firelock boat terrain pieces from Jacob.

Terrain by Hans Sprenkle

Nothing looks more welcoming on a table than some impaled skeletons! Great objective marker for Take and Hold or Control the Field scenarios.

Final Thoughts

Congratulations to Josiah Huss and Greg Padilla and thanks everyone for entering this past month. Onward to the month of Blood & Plunder units!

Sorry for the tardiness of this post. I (Joseph) have had a very busy month and I appreciate your patience!

I’ll leave you with some pics of some of the units entered so far. We only have one week to go until mid month already!
