Great Pirate Paint Off – Mid March Update

We’re well into the 3rd month of The Great Pirate Paint Off contest and it’s time for another update! This month the category up for prizes Blood & Plunder Units. This is the meat and potatoes of the contest!

The contest sponsor for this Things from the Basement. Let’s check out the sponsor & prizes that are available for this category and then we’ll look at some of the entries submitted so far!

Things from the Basement – Sponsor for Blood & Plunder Unit Category

Things from the Basement is a company that designs, produces and sells various terrain and accessories for a wide variety of games. Several of their product lines are great for players of Blood & Plunder, including:

The folks at Things from the Basement are very friendly can be be found at the various wargaming conventions throughout the year. I had the pleasure of meeting them at Historicon a couple years back.

Mediterranean Village for Blood & Plunder

I believe this set of buildings is awesome! Great, Spanish style buildings that are functional, easy to assemble and with a wide range of sizes and options.

The massive church is really impressive!

I built and painted the 4Ground version of this beautiful piece.

This is one of the mostly hotly contested categories. This is the meat and potatoes of the painting contest right here. The winner of this category will receive an engraved wooden Blood & Plunder storage box. The box from Things from the Basement is designed to hold all your cards, dice, templates and accessories.

Trees from Things from the Basement

I’m always in the market for trees for my Blood & Plunder tables! Things from the Basement has a nice variety of trees available for very reasonable prices.

Ranging from about $1.50-$3.00, these are very affordable trees for your Blood & Plunder table.

Storage Boxes from Things From the Basement

It appears they are currently out of stock (which makes our contest prize that much more valuable), but Things from the Basement created some custom storage boxes for Blood & Plunder, engraving the lids with each nation’s flag, and some classic Blood & Plunder logos and graphics.

We reviewed their entire line of storage boxes in this article.

And that brings us to our prize for the best unit entry in the 2024 Great Pirate Paint Off Contest!

Prize for the Best Blood & Plunder Unit

This is a great storage box that we have been using for several years. It can hold all your ship cards, your deck of unit and commander cards, your movement templates, your dice, your fortune coins, your tape measurer, your activation cards, and any other small accessory you might want to bring along to a game session. This is a great tool to keep all your necessary gaming equipment in one place. Its pullout tray makes for easy access and the size is great for transport to the game store or cons.

The box comes with a storage tray with 4 divisions. When inserted into the box, the tray also creates two more sections for a total of 6 subdivisions.

The box comes in light, unstained wood. I stained this box and painted over there words on the box lid and it looks super sharp! It’s a great product.

Many thanks to Things from the Basement for their contributions to the Blood & Plunder community and for the special discount for this prize (and some prizes later in the campaign!).. Check out their website and support them by picking up some of their great products!

Rules for Entering a “Unit”

For this contest we are defining a “unit” as 4-8 models of the same “type” that could be deployed together as one unit type in Blood & Plunder. The entry form has you choose one of the many units available to the various nations in Blood & Plunder. This is super simple for the metals and new resin sets of minis since they are sculpted in sets of 4. It gets a little trickier for the hard plastic customizable miniatures. A set of sailors could represent more than one of the sailor profiles in the game. In that case, just select the game unit that you will be using them as most in the game. Likewise, a “Soldier” model doesn’t differ very much from nation to nation, but enter it as the unit you intend to use it as. If you haven’t played much or at all yet, and you just aren’t sure, just choose something that looks close and if we have questions, we can contact you and help!

Blood & Plunder Unit Entries so Far

We have about 20 entries in the Unit category so far. We already have some great entries!

European Militia Cavalry by Kurtis Fraley

Always nice to see a fresh unit of cavalry!

David Cecil has been painting up a storm! This selection of handsome Spanish units is just part of what he has finished and submitted so far. Impressive work and impressive quantity!

Enter Ploeg by Andrew Cox

The Spanish and English are dominating the Unit category so far, but we have some great French and Dutch entries as well, including these fierce Dutch Boarders painted by Andrew Cox.

Check out these new Spanish models painted up by Fernando Arteaga! You can get his tips and tricks on how to paint sharp looking minis like these on Episode 2 of the Blood & Pigment Podcast!

Freebooters by Ryan Peterson

Last we have a nice of custom built English Freebooters by Ryan Peterson. Great colors, appropriately armed, and some great English flavor for these models. They could be used a solid Jamaican Privateers as well and go on an 18th century pirate ship!

Early Entry Random Prizes coming 3/18

I have a little pile of blisters of metal minis donated by Geeks and Games (my awesome local gaming store) to give away to some random entries in this category! At the end of the day Sunday, March 17th, (midnight PST) I will randomly draw 2-4 entries and send out some free minis! We really appreciate entries coming in at a slow and steady pace instead of all at once at the end of the month! If you get some entries in before the end of the day this weekend, you’ll be in the running for some free minis!

Final Thoughts

I know some of you are working hard at painting up your forces for Adpeticon net week! Snap a couple pics and enter that work in the painting contest! Get those units painted up!

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far and thanks to both Things from the Basement and Oregon City Geeks & Games for helping out with some great prize support.
