What’s New in the Sea Tournament Packet?

There are just a couple new additions to the packet, including some new directions for which optional rules are available and some new information on which scenarios will be used for the tournament.

Optional Rules

There are a few parts of the Blood & Plunder ruleset that have the disclaimer: “both players must agree to use this rule.” These are often fun, and realistic rules, but forcing players to have make that decision during a tournament and it changing per round isn’t always great, so we have made selection for you:

  1. SHAKEN UNITS IN MELEE: Shaken units engaged in melee may make Save Tests with 9+ as the target number (No Peace Beyond the Line pg 188.
  2. GUN DECKS: Because of the lower point level of this event. The rules for Gun Decks subsections on the Galleon cannot be used. At 200 points, this fun optional rule (No Peace Beyond the Line pg 186) provides too much benefit. Units manning the cannons on a Galleon must be on the deck as normal and will receive standard Heavy Cover.
  3. SCENARIO RULES: If scenarios are used Raise the Black, no scenario options should be used in the tournament. These scenario options can give some extra historical flavor or some additional interest, but the scenarios will be used in their basic form for the tournament.

Scenarios

The scenario list has been changed up a bit, mainly to provide a diversity of starting deployments. This also gives a variety of gameplay that allows different styles of army a fair chance (the initial list favored boarding a little too much)

There will also some unknowns in terms of which scenarios we will be using. Tournament play occurs over three rounds, using three different scenarios of the 5 listed in the packet. The 5 possible scenarios include:

  • Encounter (Core rule book)
  • Control the Field (Core rule book)
  • Take & Hold (Core rule book)
  • A Wanted Man (Raise the Black)
  • Chase’s End (Raise the Black)

Since two of these scenarios are not from the Core rule book, they are in the packet, just in case you don’t have access to that book. the “Anchored” scenario is also in the packet, but only because it happens to be on the same page as A Wanted Man. “Anchored ,” will NOT be an option in the Tournament.

It is smart to practice all 5 scenarios, but only 3 will actually be used in the tournament. An announcement of the scenarios we will use will be before each round of the event.

Submit Your Force Ahead of Time

To play in the tournament, the organizers will need a copy of your Force List. The easiest way to do this is to build your army using the free Blood & Plunder Online Force Builder website and submit your force’s link using the Registration Form here on Blood & Pigment. The Force Builder won’t always alert you if you have an error in your force, so it’s very helpful to validate it BEFORE the event. This makes sure you don’t have to make changes on the day of the event!

You can also use the Print feature to generate complete force print out. Or you can fill in the Force Roster sheet included in this Packet if you prefer.

Please bring 1-3 copies of your printed force list: one for the tournament organizers to confirm as legal, one for yourself, and possibly one to hand do your opponent so they can easily understand your army.

Preparing for the Tournament

The best things you can do to prepare for the tournament are:

  • Read the Packet
  • Decide on your Force
  • Practice your Force with the Tournament Scenarios

Jason recently wrote a great article on preparing for a Blood & Tournament which will be especially helpful if you’ve never played in a tournament before.
