The people have voted and we have some winners to announce in the 2025 Great Pirate Paint Off for Blood & Plunder and Oak & Iron! During the month of February we focused on Terrain pieces and Oak & Iron Ships. We had our panel of judges narrow the categories to the top 5 and then had people vote on their favorites from there. Here are the winners for these two categories!
Oak & Iron Ships
We had a few less entries that usual but we had some good ones!
First Place Oak & Iron Ship
With a decisive number of votes Erich Goebel’s 3rd Rate Ship of the Line took the top spot this year! It’s a beautiful ship!

Rigged and decked out with flags, this ship looks amazing!

Oak & Iron Runners UP
Coming in second, we had another beautiful ship of the line, painted by Armand Meza, also fully rigged!

And in third place we had a nice clean 6th Rate Frigate painted by Josiah Huss. The rigging work on all three of these is amazing!

Thank you to all our Oak & Iron painters this year!
Terrain Winners
The Terrain category is always difficult to judge because of the wide variety of subject matter and the wide variety of sources for that subjects. Some pieces are scratch built, some are fully design and printed, some are kits, and some are just painted!
We had some excellent pieces entered this year!
First Place Terrain Piece
The Terrain category was a closer category this year, but Mike Anderson came in first with his scratch built Half Timbered House!

Terrain Runner Ups
In second place we have really awesome rum distillery by Kurtis Fraley. This piece looks like a lot of fun to fight around, but your men are sure to suffer from the Drunk game condition!

There was a tie for 3rd place between the Oak & Iron Port Royal piece by John Kilian and the cheery Hanging Tree by Donald Varner.

Plunder Den Terrain Flash Challenge Update
We were planning to award the prize for the Plunder Den Terrain Flash Challenge here at the end of February as well, but we are extending it until the end of March! Get your entries in! It’s a fun project and easy to use for your North American tables in the cold north!
The techniques you will learn following Dexter’s tutorial will serve you well in many other projects as well! Right now we only have a couple entries and we’d love to get a bunch more! Dexter is giving away some of his own handcrafted terrain as a prize! Get your entries in! You can find the entry form and all the other details here!
Final Thoughts
Congratulations to Erich Goebel and Mike Anderson for winning the top spots in these categories this year! They will receive medal trophies to commemorate their victories this year!

Check the next update for some more entry spotlights and some more prize winners!
Thank you for all your organizing work!
What I noticed: In the article the 3th rate and the 4th rate Ship of the Line are each referred to as “Frigate” in contradiction to their technical and functional adequate name “Ship of the Line” in the game.
Perhaps it’s worth to correct it.
Thanks.
Bye!
Sorry, I meant 3rd rate and 2nd rate (not 3th rate and 4th rate).
