Brave Hidalgos, Soldados, and Capitanes, our celebration is over. As I write this my ship is being provisioned for the long Atlantic crossing from España to Cuba. Our European rivals wish to take our Empire that God has entrusted to us as stewards. The Lutheran dogs lead the natives astray into heresy and eternal damnation. They strip our people of wealth and burn our towns. We showed them how well Spaniards fought last year. It is time to rise up, and put them in their place once again.
Of course, I will not leave you to fend off the invaders just for the glory of God and Spain! Even though most of you would gladly fight for Spain for only those rewards. I will have riches for those of you who prove your reputación. I will once again be painting a Spanish commander for the player who amasses the most points by the end of the campaign. Additionally, I will have some blisters of Spanish models for challenge winners on weeks 3 and 9. My trivia contest will also be back this year in a more limited capacity. Two Questions one on week 3, and one on week 9. For a correct answer I will send you the finest powder from my armory. My second also has a few surprise models that he will be giving away as well.
As we return to war remember to be Ruthless in your pursuit of the heathen interlopers. This is our home. They wish to take by force of arms, everything you have built. Stand up and defend your lands with muskets, bows, lances or swords! ¡SANTIAGO!
Spanish Commander Garrett Swader
My real name is Garrett Swader and I’m honored to be leading true Spaniards again this year. I consider myself a board gamer first and a miniatures gamer second. I have always had a love of learning history despite being a scientist. While I am not specifically a “pirate” fan, I so like studying the entire period of European colonization of the Americas.
My choice of factions when I got into the game was very easy for me. I have always thought the trajectory of the Spanish Empire in the Americas was fascinating and I always played Spain in video games such as Age of Empires 3 and Sid Meier’s Pirates.
I continue to preach the word of Blood and Plunder’s best faction based on national flavor and diversity of gameplay options. For anyone who chooses to play Spanish this year, Welcome to the community and remember to be Ruthless! Santiago!
Spanish Second-in-Command – Josh Shivak
¡Santiago!
Now that the Spanish battle cry is out of the way, let’s get down to business.
Hi, I am Josh Shivak. I have been an avid Spanish player ever since the Firelock booth sold me the faction many, many years ago. What did they use to convince me to play? It’s the most diverse faction, AAAAAND you can chase people around with pointy sticks. I was sold. I appreciate the historical aspect of Blood & Plunder but if I am honest, the oddball lists really draw me to the game.
The real question is, why aren’t you already signed up to play for Spain? We have the best Fighting Man in the game. The Mission Priest. Having a bad day? Bring the Padre. Sure the dice could be against you, but nothing, NOTHING, beats yelling out ¡Santiago! in your gaming club to announce to the world that Spain is about to bring the pain.
If that rousing speech hasn’t convinced you to play for Spain, have you seen the new Corsarios models?
In the world of the real, one of my other hobbies is coaching kids the sport of Fencing. I aspire to the level of swagger those Corsarios models exhibit. Every self respecting Spanish player (and also those from lesser nations) should own at least one unit of these guys.

National Objectives for the Spanish
This year, the weekly objectives for Week 3 & Week 9 are unique to the Nation you play. Our objectives are listed below
Week 3 Objective – Dios esté contigo
Play a game using the mission priest, spiritual leader, standard bearer with religious iconography, or a ship’s stern/sails with religious Iconography(can be O&I ships). Best picture or model wins a blister of Corsarios. The player who plays the most games fulfilling the challenge will receive a set of Spanish Inquisition models (Monty Python style).
Week 3 Trivia Question: Who was the governor of Santo Domingo in 1655 when Cromwell’s western design was repelled from Hispaniola? All correct answers will receive commander cards and new ammo objective tokens.
Week 9 Objective – Peninsulares
Play a game using a Spanish professional unit(Soldados, Soldados Reformados, Granaderos, Viscainos), a Galleon/Ship of the Line O&I ship, or a Hidalgo character in your list. A random player who fulfills the challenge will receive a blister of Corsarios. The top 4 players with the most games fulfilling the challenge will receive a blunder monkey model.
Week 9 Trivia Question: What was the original Spanish name of Jamaica? All correct answers will receive commander cards and new ammo objective tokens.
End of campaign BONUS PRIZE! – Reputación
We have two prizes for the end of the campaign:
- Most Points Earned: The Player that earned the most points at the end of the campaign will receive a painted Spanish commander.
- Trivia Master: A random player who answers both trivia questions correctly will receive a blister of Milicianos to bolster their garrison
Spanish Commander Cards
Custom-printed Commander Cards are being created for all commanders in the Summer of Plunder. These promo cards are fully legal for Blood & Plunder games and are fancy versions of the “Standard Spanish Commanders” present in Raise the Black.
