Over the course of 2025, Firelock Games has released a full set of useful Character models for Blood & Plunder. We’ve recently showcased the Sharp-Eyed Lookout, the Bosun, and the Drunk Pirate model, and here we have the Cook miniature.

Painting time has been scarce, but I finally got the mini painted and now is a good time to share it since it’s available.
Blood & Plunder Cook Pirate Model

The Cook model obviously has inspiration in Robert Lewis Stevenson’s Treasure Island villain, Long John Silver.

With his missing leg, wooden crutch, and threatening pose, it’s an excellent nod to this classic.

Painting the Cook Model
This is a fairly simple model, without a lot of accessories to distract from the basics of trousers, shirt, jacket and hat. I chose to go with red jacket as a homage to Robert Newton’s portrayal of Long John Silver in Disney’s Treasure Island movie adaption.

I used paints primarily from the Monument Hobbies paint set for Blood & Plunder for this model, along with washes from the Citadel line. Nothing fancy! Base, wash and highlight each color: flesh tones, red, white blue, dark grey, and brown and silver details. It was a fairly easy model to paint while working away on another large batch of minis.

I really should have given him some heavy 5 o’clock shadow, but maybe I’ll do that on a second copy of the minis.

The Cook Miniature

I can’t quite figure out this minis face. He either has a very large upper lip, or he is supposed to have a mustache. I didn’t want this version to have a mustache, so he just has a big lip. But I think you could do either way. The bits of hair protruding from under his hat are a little odd, but other than those two small things, the minis was great to work with. I just can’t get over how nice and detailed the printed resin minis are.

Using the Cook in Blood & Plunder
The Cook is (currently) one of the easiest Characters to fit into your pirate crew at only 2pts for the Fighting Man upgrade to a model in your force. He really serves as a budget Grizzled Veteran, providing some helpful Fatigue management while he’s on the board. The stats for the Cook can be found in the Raise the Black expansion book for Blood & Plunder, or on the free online Force Builder.

He has 1 Command Point that can only be used to Rally, with a respectable 4″ Command Range. The Cook also brings the Brawlers Special Rule with him, making his unit a bit more deadly in melee (exploding 10’s). He isn’t restricted by any nationality, but he can only join units with the Sailors or Expert Sailors Special Rule. There are a lot of units in Blood & Plunder with these Special Rules, so he’s not hard to get on the table, especially when playing any sort of game at sea.

Managing incoming Fatigue is so important in Blood & Plunder, and the Cook is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to do that.

I recently used the Cook in a couple games and he was very helpful. I stuck in my opening force for a Escalation League session, at 75 in the Baymen faction.

With an extra Rally action, I was able to help control Fatigue on my units, specifically my Commander’s unit, and even get some extra value out of key units by pushing more often, knowing I could give them a Rally soon.

In my second game of the evening, the Cook’s unit of Jamaican Privateers was Drunk, bringing their Resolve down to 4.

His unit went carousing down the street, and two volleys from enemy units killed 5 out of 6 of the models in the unit, leaving poor Long John running around by himself. But he didn’t fail any of those Fatigue tests!

I had him stump back up the street and hide out with the Commander’s unit so I could keep getting his Rally actions.

Cook Photo Galleries

I had to set up some pictures from the mutineers storming the stockade and blockhouse from Treasure Island.

I haven’t seen a lot of this model painted up yet, but here’s some really great cooks and Long John Silver models kitbashed from other minis, or sprues. Be sure to check out Jason’s guide to making a Long John Silver cook model.
