Firelock Games recently released a set of new Character miniatures and they’re awesome! We recently looked at the Boatswain (or “Bosun”) and now we’d like to highlight the new Sharp-Eyed Lookout sculpt.

This model is doing exactly what a Lookout should be doing!

This sculpt is simply dressed with in shirt, ragged pants, simple belt, sword and plain woolen hat.

Painting the Sharp-Eyed Lookout is fast and easy with just 3 garments, one weapon and his eyeglass. I chose a set of basic colors so he would work with any force.
Sharp-Eyed Lookout Stats and Rules
The Sharp-Eyed Lookout is a Fighting Man Character released in the Raise the Black expansion book for Blood & Plunder. This Character is a little unique in that he doesn’t do a lot during a game, but he can have a large impact before the game starts.

The Sharp-Eyed Lookout costs an additional 4pts on top of the base model and can be included in any Force as long as it includes a size 2 or greater Ship. He does not have any Command Points or Special Rules but his real value is in his one time extra ability. In all standard games of Blood & Plunder, each player rolls a d10 to determine who will take the roles of Attacker and Defender in the scenario.
Various Factions have modifiers which can push them to be Attacker or Defender more often and the high roll will be the Attacker. Fortune Coins cannot be spent on this die roll (since Fortune Tokens are not gained until the start of the game) and the result of the die roll can be important! In many scenarios, the setup and goals for each player are very different, and players can build lists that will favor one role over the other.

The Sharp-Eyed Lookout lets a player either re-roll their die for this test, or force their opponent to re-roll their die. Or, if both players forces contain this Character, players can only choose to re-roll their own die. This can drastically improve the chances of a player gaining their desired role in a game!
Many factions have bonuses or penalties for being either Attacker or Defender as well and this Character can help you control that a little bit. The biggest one that immediately comes to mind is the Golden Age Pirates. If they are the Defender in a scenario, they might be Drunk. Having your Force trying to fight while Drunk is very entertaining, but doesn’t usually help you win.

Several factions (Logwood Cutters, Baymen, Pirates, Blackbeard’s Men, Caesar’s Men, Flying Gang, Golden Age Pirates) all get the free activation card mulligan if they are the Attacker. But most of these factions don’t have a bonus to their attacker roll, making them vulnerable to pirate hunting factions like Royal Navies, Armada de Barlovento and even Buccaneer factions.

This Sharp-Eyed Lookout mini is part of a new set of Character minis including a Standard Bearer, Drummer, Boatswain and a Cook. This release goes a long way in filling in the needed minis for playable Blood & Plunder characters!

These minis retail for $10 each. There are a couple more character minis in the works as well, and there maybe a rumor of a Character Pack which contains several of these new sculpts at a bit of a discount.
